Inspiration Monday: The Genuine Link In Between Weight-loss and also Willpower

If you’ve ever tried to lose weight, then you might have noticed a common struggle that tends to come up again and again: the concept of willpower. Or, more specifically, the lack thereof it. People who are trying to lose weight frequently say that they struggle with the willpower to overcome temptations. So often, this makes people feel frustrated, weak and even defeated.

So much of this comes from what we’ve been told or taught about dieting in the past. That’s the idea that “dieting” is all about giving foods up. Frankly, that model sets people up for failure from the start. Being told that certain foods are off limits seems to make most people crave them more. And it’s nearly impossible to eliminate entire sets of food groups from your diet, as so many eating plans do.

But when people begin one of these plans, and they ultimately fail, it often sets them further back—sometimes to the point of just giving up entirely.

We’re here to say that it doesn’t have to be that way.

Let’s look at the definition of willpower. It’s a noun that means, “control exerted to do something or restrain impulses.”

When we try to exert control over food impulses by making significant changes or eliminating large groups or categories of food, it can ultimately go awry. For the vast majority of people, it’s simply not sustainable. This is why so many people have shared that they’ve tried (and failed) at multiple “diets” in the past. And this is how people tend to end up in an unhealthy pattern of yo-yo dieting.

Weight Loss Without Deprivation

MO_packshot_01-12.jpg

All of this is why Nutrisystem has always been so adamant about making smart substitutions that don’t leave you feeling deprived. People seem to have the most success when they don’t feel like they’re missing out in any way. And why should they? Food is such a big part of our lives—and it’s meant to be enjoyed.

For that reason, we are focused on helping people to make healthy changes while still getting to enjoy foods that they love. And we make it super simple!

Our easy-to-prep meals and snacks are perfectly portioned versions of all of your favorite foods, including pizza, burgers, pasta, and even desserts like cookies and cupcakes. Plus, we deliver them directly to your door for the ultimate convenience!

In addition to our heat-and-eat meals, we also teach you how to make smarter food choices in your everyday life. This way, you can lose the weight AND learn how to keep it off. With our tasty recipes, dining out tips and healthy cooking guidance, you can enjoy all of the deliciousness that life has to offer all while you reach your weight loss goals.

When people don’t feel like they’re giving up all of the things that they enjoy, they can have much greater success. Plus, they don’t feel like a failure or that they’re weak when they reach for those favorite foods—a common feeling with so many other diet plans.

The truth is you can do hard things—you have done hard things. But setting up impossible goals around eating really only sets you up for failure. And it has nothing to do with weakness and everything to do with unrealistic standards.

Shift Your Focus

MO_amat_07-8.jpg

At the end of the day, it’s all about shifting your focus to long-term, sustainable goals and removing the idea of willpower from the equation. Humans simply don’t have endless willpower and eventually you’re going to give in to temptations and feel like you’ve failed.

Instead, by focusing on making reasonable and sustainable changes, while still getting to enjoy food that you love, you can have great success. And, most important, you can feel good about yourself, because you deserve to! You don’t have to be in it on your own, either. Nutrisystem is here to help set you up and support you on your journey.

Life doesn't improve by coincidence; it gets better by modification

Life doesn’t get better by chance; it gets better by CHANGE.

If you’ve followed me for any amount of time, you probably know that I have suffered with the symptoms of ulcerative colitis for more than a decade.

For much of my experience, I relied on diets, medications, supplements, etc. to help me feel better. It’s almost like I didn’t trust that my body could heal itself.

Real quick…

I absolutely, 1000% believe there’s a time and place for medications. I spent years on biologics (Remicade, Entvvio, Stelera), and they allow me to LIVE my life. I am forever grateful for these medications and will ALWAYS support the research that is being done to allow IBD patients a live a full life.

I knew something needed to change.

In my case, however…

I saw these drugs stop working for me one-by-one, and I knew I couldn’t leave my health up to chance anymore and made it a point to CHANGE how I lived my life.

Full transparency, I didn’t have a choice when I made this decision…

I was house-bound, going to the bathroom 30+ times per day with bloody diarrhea, night sweats, hair falling out…

MO_logo_3-12.jpg

My health honestly couldn’t get any worse.

Then, I made this decision to change my life (and improve my health) while sitting on the couch in my basement, all alone, crying my eyes out, and haven’t looked back.

Nothing changes until YOU change.

  • I stopped working so much (aka waking up at 4 o’clock in the morning and working every weekend)
  • I hired a team and started to delegate tasks
  • I started talk therapy
  • I prioritized my sleep
  • I stopped exercising so hard
  • I stopped counting calories and started nourishing my body (with minerals)
  • I stopped drinking so much alcohol

None of this happened overnight, but I committed to actually CHANGING how I lived my life.

Life doesn’t get better by chance; it gets better by CHANGE.

If you want to hear more about my experience, check out EP117 of my podcast: What it looks like to ‘manage stress.’

And if you want to improve your health, it starts with radical change, an all-in commitment to yourself, and not half-assing it.

When you focus on true change and do it consistently day after day, your life (and health) will improve.

Are YOU ready to make a CHANGE in your life and health?

6 Easy Tips to Add Even More Activity to Your Day

People often make staying active more complicated than it has to be. While you might not always feel like you have time to spend at the gym or making a plan for structured exercise (like going for a run), there are so many other ways to fit more movement into your day.

Even something as simple as taking breaks from sitting (and just standing up) can make a big difference in your health. As you might have heard it said, “sitting is the new smoking”—meaning that those who sit more have a greater risk of disease.

If you’re on a Nutrisystem weight loss plan, we recommend fitting in at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day. And when you simplify your approach to staying active, you’ll find how much easier it is to fit this movement into your day. Here are some easy ways to get up and get moving!

1. Park Further Away

MO_amat_04-8.jpg

Something as simple as parking further away from where you need to be can get you moving a lot more. Sure, there might be a spot right next to the door to the grocery store—but park in the back and you’ll get a whole bunch of extra steps in. Plus, you’ll avoid those car door dings from shopping carts!

2. Take the Stairs

MO_amat_02-4.jpg

Whether you work in an office building, live in a city, or are staying in a hotel, anytime that you avoid using an elevator and take the stairs is an opportunity to get your heartrate up and squeeze in a little cardio. Climbing stairs is a simple everyday physical activity that absolutely has health benefits. Even if you’re just at home, you can throw in a few extra times going up and down the stairs for an easy cardio routine. Stair climbing can strengthen and tone leg muscles, too.

3. Walk and Talk

MO_amat_05-10.jpg

If you’re on the phone for work or social reasons, why not get up out of your seat and walk while you talk? Unless you need to be physically in front of a computer, walking and talking can be a great way to add movement to your day. Some people even say that moving during a phone conversation helps them to concentrate more as it helps them to avoid getting distracted by a screen. If you are someone that has long conference calls and can pop in the earbuds, you can potentially take those meetings on-the-go! If you can’t leave your desk, perhaps consider standing during phone calls. Standing is definitely a “win” over sitting, which is why so many people are opting for standing desks these days.

4. Take the Dog for a Walk

MO_packshot_06-3.jpg

If you have a furry family member that needs to get outside and use the bathroom several times a day, why not turn that into a quick walk? Even just a walk around the block is a lot better than standing in your yard or letting the dog out unattended. It will do you both good to get moving!

5. Do Some Chores

MO_packshot_01-8.jpg

Have you ever seen one of those videos where people are dancing to music while doing their chores? Besides making a monotonous routine a lot more fun, those folks are also getting their blood pumping and burning some calories. You can even incorporate some fitness moves into the chores you were already going to do anyways. Do some quick lunges while you mop or vacuum—or do some little jumps while you scrub the mirrors and windows around your house. While you might not feel like you have time to fit in much exercise in your day, there are easy ways to squeeze in little workouts that end up paying off.

6. Walk (or Bike) Instead of Driving

MO_amat_01-8.jpg

If you have a close-by errand to run, why not walk or bike? Obviously if you’re picking up a bunch of groceries, that’s not feasible. But if you’re just running down the road to pick up a prescription or maybe return a library book, this can be an opportunity to move more. With the higher gas prices these days, you’ll also feel good about saving money!

Your Efforts Will Pay Off

While these may seem like overly simple things, when you do them repetitively and find more ways to get up and get moving throughout the day, you’ll see those efforts pay off. Too often, people don’t move enough because they think it has to be a big planned-out activity. But when you start looking at everyday opportunities to move more, you realize how easy it can all be.

There is no doubt that Fortune has been quite successful in every field that she entered. Whether it’s acting, comedy, or writing, Feimster has proved her talent and there is no need to emphasize that. However, there had been always a thing in her life, that she always struggled with.

It was Fortune’s weight. She had always been a plus-size person, which she never liked. However, the good news is that recently, Fortune has completely changed her physique by losing 40 pounds. Let’s find out about her struggle with weight throughout her life.

Also, read how the American singer, Doja Cat, lost 20 pounds by maintaining her diet and working out.

Fortune’s Struggle With Weight Gain

MO_amat_05-9.jpg

Talking about her struggle with her weight and body image, Feimster said that she had always struggled with accepting how she was.

Fortune said that she never felt comfortable in her skin and thought that there was something wrong with her.

However, a fundamental shift in Feimster’s perspective came when she got to see many people and realized that she wasn’t the only one struggling with body image. “I don’t know that any of us get to the place where we’re completely comfortable with ourselves,” Feimster said.

She added, “Even the most beautiful, the thinnest people I know are like, ‘Ugh, I hate my body.’ Like, what? I say that in my special. I was born 10 and a half pounds. I’m a big baby and so I was always a big kid. And you know when you’re a kid it’s hard because you’re just trying to like fit in, but it’s always been a part of who I am.”

After struggling with her identity and body image for years, Feimster finally made peace with it. “I think at one point in your life, you’ve got to accept who you are,” she said in her interview with BUILD. “What else are you gonna do? Hate yourself for who you are?”

Fortune Feimster’s Weight Loss Journey

MO_logo_3-9.jpg

However, after thinking about losing weight and staying in dilemma, Fortune finally decided to get rid of the unhealthy and extra pounds.

She made this decision after consulting with her personal doctor, who warned her in a way that she didn’t like.

“I had a doctor smack my bare belly. But it definitely, like, set off this thing in my head of like, ‘All right, if people are smacking your bare belly, there’s a problem,” Fortune recalled the incident. She further said,

“I was like, for the first time in my life I finally attempted to be healthy and what that looked like for someone like me who has never tried to be healthy and it did have results. And it turns out that when you diet and exercise you lose weight. Who knew?”

How did Fortune Lose Weight?

Let’s now turn to the main question, how did Fortune lose weight? Well, Feimster lost weight because she made some sacrifices and changes to the way she spent her days. She started focusing on what she ate and how she ate. Not only that, but Fortune also worked out a lot.

She said goodbye to all the junk food and started eating more of a plant-based diet. Along with eating vegetables, Feimster also ate a lot of fruits. For protein, she ate lean meat and eggs. This healthy diet helped Fortune in achieving healthy results.

Whereas Feimster focused on her diet plan, she also gave equal importance to her workout routine.

Because she knew that this was how she was going to make a difference. Yes, eating healthily is crucial but so is exercising.

Fortune also drank a lot of water, which increased her energy level. At first, changing her lifestyle was quite difficult for Feimster.

But after she tried and lived for a few weeks with her new routine, Feimster realized that her new healthy routine wasn’t only beneficial for her but it was also very liberating from all that unhealthy food that she was addicted to before.

Before & After Weight Loss

MO_amat_12-9.jpg

After losing 40 pounds, Fortune now weighs around 150 pounds. Whereas before, Feimster’s weight was about 190 pounds. She doesn’t seem to stop at this point. She is planning to go further and lose more pounds.

The American actress and director, Kathy Bates, lost 60 pounds by changing her lifestyle.

Final Words

There is no way that if you work hard and do whatever is needed to be done and fail at your goals.

Just look at the weight loss journey of Fortune Feimster and analyze her struggle with obesity. All you need to live a healthy life is commitment and determination and things will fall in the right place.
