EP115: Reaching the source of acne with Dr. Yug Varma

MO_amat_08-5.jpg

Welcome to another episode of the Carrots ‘N’ Cake Podcast. As you know, I have struggled with acne over the years so this topic hits home for me. I was honored to interview Dr. Yug Varma, who specializes in getting to the root cause of acne.

Yug Varma, PhD, is the Cofounder & CEO of Phyla, the world’s most advanced probiotic acne system. He has 10+ years of microbiome research experience. His experience includes an extensive background in bio-organic chemistry, microbiology, and synthetic biology. Dr. Varma received his scientific training at several distinguished academic institutions, including Johns Hopkins University (PhD) and University of California, San Francisco. His scientific work has been published in many prestigious journals, including Nature.

Next, Dr. Varma’s mission is to change the way we treat chronic bacterial diseases. He works tirelessly to achieve this goal with a microbiome-based technology platform. Above all, he is passionate about promoting scientific literacy, and devotes a significant amount of time demystifying microbiome research and making the latest research accessible to the general public.

We discussed a variety of great topics, which included:

  • What the microbiome reveal about acne.
  • The different skin microbiomes all over our body.
  • Using pre/pro/post-biotics to treat acne. Plus, what the differences are.
  • What is the root cause acne.
  • How we currently treat acne right now and is there a better way.

In addition to his research, you can find out more about Dr. Varma’s products at http://phylabiotics.com & yug@phitherapeutics.com.

Finally, if you are interested in working with Tina to undercover causes for your hormonal acne, you can find out more here.

EP117: What it appears like to 'manage tension'

MO_amat_01-3.jpg

I used to get so angry and frustrated when people told me that I needed to ‘manage my stress.’ Like, what did that mean exactly? How the heck could I manage stress when I had so much on my plate? It all seemed super overwhelming, and I honestly didn’t see a way out of the stress-filled life that I was currently living.

It wasn’t until my health got so, so, so bad that I was literally forced to make changes. It was such a low point in my life, I don’t want anyone to experience a similar health scare, so I decided to share some of the things I *actually* did to get a better handle of the stress in my life.

I share more than 20 different ideas (some big, some small) as well as plenty of mindset and behaviors shifts that eventually made the difference.

As I always say… it’s never one thing, so hopefully this episode gives you some ideas for working towards a better balance with the stress in your life. And remember to give yourself time, patience, and grace with the process. It doesn’t happen overnight, but it WILL happen. Hang in there!

10 WAYS TO MOVE EVEN MORE ON A DAILY BASIS AND BURN CALORIES

Cramming exercise into already busy days can be hard, in this post we will look at ways to move more in everyday life. Simple changes can make all the difference when trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

AcaiBerry_packshot_8-3.jpg

Admit it, We’ve all said it…. “Who has time to exercise when you’re a…”

Just fill in the blank: busy parent, working parent, student, teacher, commuter, person who hates exercise? You’re not alone!  As a work at home mum I find it very hard to cram in extra exercise. Thankfully I walk the school run twice a day so I do always manage to get some exercise (well at least on weekdays, term time anyway). But I could always do with more! I used to be a big fan of the gym but I simply don’t have the time for that anymore.

From kitchen discos, to more “private time” here are 10 tips and ideas to boost movement during your normal day without having to take time out to schedule exercise.

1. TAKE THE STAIRS

I know I know, this is totally boring and you have heard it a million times before! But it’s so true and probably the best tip in this post.

Using the stairs instead of the going in the lift (or elevator for my USA followers) not only increases your heart rate, but it can help with balance and improving leg muscle. Don’t think going down stairs is a waste of time either because it’s not!  Walking down stairs burns more calories than walking on a flat surface and certainly more than standing in a lift.

So top tip from me is skip the lift or escalator, your weight loss and heart will thank you.

2. YOUTUBE

YouTube has some fantastic quick and simple exercise videos. Long gone is the exercise video from Joe Bloggs in Corrie! Joe Wicks offers some quick and easy routines or I have recently discovered yoga.

AcaiBerry_amat_4-2.jpg

3. PARK FURTHER AWAY

Yes yes I know you have heard this one a zillion times too… I used to do it all of the time (also to avoid dings in my car) but sadly parent and child spaces are always the closest to the shop. Next time you go to work or the supermarket choose the parking space furthest away from the building. Please be mindful about safety and ensure you are parking in a well lit area.

Another quick tip for shopping is ditch the trolley at the shop and lug the bags back to the car (brilliant for toning the arms).

4. SWAP YOUR OFFICE CHAIR FOR A YOGA BALL

This is definitely a controversial one, some believe its not great for posture. But it’s the latest craze hitting the UK!

Pros of sitting on a yoga ball…

  • Improved core strength
  • Promotes good balance and stability
  • Burns calories

I haven’t tried it myself yet but I am definitely considering it at least part time.

AcaiBerry_amat_4-3.jpg

5. WALK A DOG

If you have your own dog this one is much easier to do..

But if you don’t it’s still possible.

  • Try putting a post up on your local Facebook group, there are so many elderly people who can’t get their dogs out for a long walk anymore who would jump at the chance.
  • Contact your local animal shelter, they are usually calling out for people to help.
  • Visit BorrowMyDoggy and sign up. It’s a great website that connects local dog owners with people looking to walk dogs. It’s safe and such a lovely way to help the local community too. Friends of ours used to walk a local dog which they found through this agency, they loved it so much it encouraged them to adopt their own dog from a local animal shelter.

6. HAVE MORE SEX

You’re welcome… and your partner will thank me for it too!

Okay sex isn’t the same as a jog or bike ride. But it can burn up to as much as 5 calories per minute! 30 minutes of sex (am I being generous here?) can burn 150 calories.. that earned you a chocolate bar!

7.  DO THE HOUSEWORK

You have to do it anyway, so try and remember you are still burning calories.

  • Sweeping x 10 minutes = 37 calories
  • Vacuuming x 10 minutes = 37 calories
  • Ironing x 20 minutes = 50 calories
  • Mopping x 20 minutes = 42 calories
  • Making beds x 10 minutes = 23 calories
  • Washing dishes x 10minutes = 26 calories

Total time:  1hr 10 minutes = 215 calories

AcaiBerry_amat_5-2.jpg

8. WALK ON YOUR LUNCH BREAK

If you work somewhere near a park or safe area to walk try and dedicate 15 minutes of your lunch break to go for a walk. You will be thankful for it later, getting out of the office and enjoying some fresh air is not only good for calorie burning but your mind too.

9. HAVE A KITCHEN DISCO

Get the kids together and play your favourite songs for 15 minutes. Dancing is a fabulous way to burn calories and work on your balance and coordination. Plus, you can make it a game or contest with your family. The kids won’t realise they are exercising too. We even have a cheap USB disco ball in the kitchen to make it even more fun.

10. WALK TO WORK, SHOP, SCHOOL

It is so tempting to jump in the car especially when the weather is terrible. But swapping the car for your feet is not only great for the environment but great for burning calories too. Our kiddos moan and whinge every morning about walking to School but we encourage it. It’s great for me and Mrfatgirlskinny but also it promotes a healthy lifestyle to the children too (as much as they hate it).

AcaiBerry_amat_5-1.jpg

This tangy lemon curd is delicious in overnight oats, on pancakes, on toast.. well pretty much on anything! While it does require a little bit of work, it comes together quickly and only requires 4 simple ingredients.

My boys absolutely love this healthier version of lemon curd, especially on toast for breakfast!!

WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS RECIPE….

  • Packed with bright, colourful, tangy lemon flavour.

  • Delicious without being full of sugar.

  • Syn Free* when following the Slimming World plan.

AcaiBerry_packshot_8.jpg

IS THIS LEMON CURD SUITABLE FOR BATCH COOKING?

I would recommend making smaller batches of this curd. It will keep in the fridge in a suitable container for up to 5 days. But it isn’t suitable for freezing.

IS THIS LEMON CURD SLIMMING WORLD FRIENDLY?

This recipe is unofficial and has not been verified by Slimming World. But fatgirlskinny estimate it to be Syn Free when following the plan. It does contain 3 tablespoons of Sweetener but because this has 15 – 20 servings depending on how you use it. I do not believe it needs to be Synned… Hopefully you are not planning on devouring the entire pot in one go. This would not be a sensible decision.

LEMON CURD TIPS:

What do you use this delicious tangy lemon curd on? There are so many options….

  • On toast
  • In a sandwich
  • On pancakes or waffles
  • Mixed into porridge
  • Layered into overnight oats
  • Mixed into fat free Greek style or natural yoghurt

Straightforward exercise understanding for weight loss

AC_prod_tran_2-1.png

Exercise is just moving. Moving in a certain way to get a reaction and an adaptation. This is a simple, plain English explanation of what that looks like.

When you get yourself out of breath, raise your heart rate and get a bit of a sweat on, your cardiovascular system says, hang on a minute, whats happening here? Your heart and lungs then go away and adapt to cope with what you are asking it to do. Your heart and lungs get stronger and more efficient at pumping blood and oxygen around your body. This provides the oxygen to fuel your fat burning mechanism. You get fitter and more able to cope with what life throws your way.

When you move muscles under resistance, they do the same. It’s called hypertrophy. Your muscles get stronger. Both muscular endurance and muscular strength. Your body adapts.

Adaptation simply means, do what you can, rest, repeat and try and beat it next time. This applies to resistance work and cardiovascular fitness. Let’s take this and use press ups and walking as examples for adaptations;

A press up will help strengthen your chest muscles, your abdominals and arms. If you start with press ups against a wall, your muscles adapt so you will be able to do them leaning against a table top. Then you will be strong enough to do them on the floor, first on your knees then as a full press up. Once you are doing better press ups you can do say 10 seconds. Next time you aim to do 15 seconds etc. Maybe you adapt by repetitions. You do 10 press ups without stopping. You set a target to do 20 next time etc. It’s doing it the best way you can and then beating it as you get stronger.

Walking helps general fitness. You walk as fast as you can till you need to stop. Next time try walking a bit further or a longer time. Maybe you pick a different route that includes inclines. A slight gradient hill to start with, progressing to a steep hill or flight of stairs. You get the picture. Adaptation on your terms.

As you move your body, it requires energy. It gets this from the calories you take on board in the food you consume

When you move it raises you metabolism. The better your metabolism the better you can burn calories. By doing consistent movement throughout the day, your metabolism is constantly being stimulated.

You will be more likely to burn calories while you are watching the TV! What?

It’s called EPOC. Excess Post Oxygen Consumption. Simplified it means, when you raise your metabolism, heart rate and use your muscles energy reserves through exercise, the body needs to recover and return to normal. To do this it requires energy. So when you are at rest your body is still working.

Moving releases endorphins into your system. Endorphins are commonly known as ‘happy hormones’. Happy hormones help create a more positive mindset and a better coping mechanism.

Basic yes, true yes, simple to do yes.
